The first day

It started normal, catching a cab, dropping off at school and paying the fees. I walked up to the gate and pushed. The unbelievable thing happened: It didn’t open. I tried again, nothing happened. I checked my watch, I didn’t have any, so I checked my phone: 8:29 AM. The gates were supposed to close at Eight past thirty-one minutes, I was just two minutes earlier. Still, no sign of any movement in the building nor on the grounds. Perplexed I tried the door again, nope. The next thing I did was wave at the CCTV cameras trying to get the attention of whoever was inside the building and, hopefully, get to school before attendance. Lots of tries and gasping for breath and/with still no luck. The timing was Eight past forty-seven minutes. I checked the date: 2nd December 2019, Monday.
The last trick up my sleeve was to fish out my phone and text my friend to get the teacher to open the gate, but all I got for three replies was: “LOL”, “???”, and “sucker!” I gave up. I walked to the nearest bus stop and waited for a taxi. Then it hit me, the most unbelievable thing: Today was the first day of, a month-long, holidays.
Background:
The above story was an answer to the following question given to a 9th grader.
“My alarm is set for 6:30, but sometimes I ignore it and drift back to sleep until 8:00, when my mother gets impatient for me to get up and have my breakfast before leaving home. On this day, I was leaving home for school when I witnessed the most unbelievable…”
