1. Defining Chemical Kinetics (SLO 9.1.1)
Chemical Kinetics is the branch of physical chemistry that deals with the rates of chemical reactions, the factors that affect these rates (such as temperature, concentration, and catalysts), and the mechanism by which reactions occur.
While Chemical Thermodynamics tells us if a reaction is possible (spontaneous) under a given set of conditions, Chemical Kinetics tells us how fast that reaction will actually proceed.
2. The Scope of Kinetics
In this chapter, we focus on three main pillars of kinetics:
- Reaction Rates: The change in concentration of reactants or products per unit time.
- Reaction Mechanisms: The step-by-step sequence of elementary reactions by which overall chemical change occurs.
- Collision Theory: The requirement that particles must collide with sufficient energy (Activation Energy) and proper orientation to react.

Thermodynamically, diamonds are unstable and should spontaneously turn into graphite. However, because the kinetics of this reaction are incredibly slow (extremely high activation energy), diamonds last for millions of years. This is a classic example of a “kinetically trapped” state.
